TIKTOK AND AAVE

Recently, I've noticed a lot of people my age using a new kind of slang that comes from the social media app TikTok. Examples of this include:

• Not me... before a sentence indicating the person is doing an embarrassing action
• It's the... for me to indicate the reason for holding a positive or negative opinion
• Hits different, which is typically used to describe something that feels significantly better than its alternatives
• Chile meaning "child", deadass meaning "serious", and periodt to emphasize the end of a sentence

And several others; Google Trends shows all these examples increasing in usage as well. I did a little research into where this style of speech comes from, and it turns out it's almost all taken from decades-old practices in African American Vernacular English, which has some different semantic and phonological rules that make these terms possible. It's pretty interesting to see that influence seeping through in a new way.
